Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California
renter 18 years tired of paying for carport lights
moved in 1989 to present, discovered apx. one week later that the carport lights (3) were metered to the inside of our apt. since that time we spoke with the realty mngrs. about the cost year after year plus the cost of replacing the lights ourselves, finally in 1989 our electric company gave us the estimated cost for all, apx. $325.00, we turned it in and finally were reimbursed for the 10 years. since 2000 no other realty mngrs. have offered any assistance or any word from the actual owner . Last week I finally said to the new mngr. that I could no longer afford to keep the carports on, I--name removed--told rather quickly that I would be responsible if anything happened to any visitor or tenent. I spoke with the electrical company, and--name removed--told it--name removed--illegal for the mngr. to tell me so, the bill is in my name I have been paying for power that is not in my contract the other is the owners responsibility to keep his property safe and he--name removed--been aware of the meter in your home for years, in february 2007 I lost my husband and many things have gone on , his death--cme removed--sudden --name removed--I also lost a $1500.00 income from him. You are not really asking a question, but I'll read between the lines.
Call local housing board, and file a complaint. Also, write to P.U.C. (the electric company will give you address, should be on your bills).
Write to the landlord, and tell him that you are suing in Small Claims court for rent abatement.
Examine your lease carefully regarding provisions that may permit landlord to charge you for carport.
