Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California
representing plaintiff
Hi,
I'm preparing for an unlawful detainer lawsuit for my mother who is the plaintiff. Unfortunately, she does not speak English well. Can I represent her in court? If so, do I have to fill out any type of paper work to do so? I will also be acting as her translator. Is this ok? I've already filed the Unlawful Detainer, and Complaint under her name as a the plaintiff. Please help. Thanks!

Re: representing plaintiff
You cannot represent her if you're not an attorney. Many people represent themselves with the help of an interpreter, which you can do. You will have to translate aloud everything the judge and opposing party say to your mother's language, and also translate what your mother says to English. You can't help her during her testimony, though. You'll just have to make sure she's prepared before the trial.
