Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

Am I really responsible for the entire amount?

Three roommates and I rented a house in Davis, CA. Two roommates were supposed to pay for first month's rent and the other two were going to pay the deposit. I moved out before the lease was terminated and found out later through a letter that 1500 was put on my credit report because the deposit was never paid. Is this legal? Am I really responsible for this entire amount despite the fact there are three other roommates on the lease? Are there exceptions to why I would be the only one charged with the amount?

Did all of your roomates sign the lease?

Was the property left damaged to the extent of $1500?

It would seem to me that all of the parties are equally liable. Your failure to insure that your roomates didn't pay the deposit is not the landlords problem. On the other hand, his failure to follow up with all of you to collect the deposit could be considered negligence on his part.

Finally, your roomates are liable to you, and as I said, you are probably all equally liable to the landlord.
