Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

Retroactive Lease

My lease was up for renewal May 1st. On April 24th i signed an letter indicating my intent to renew and was told by my leasing agent that they would contact me to sign the new lease. Or rent was due on May 5th so i paid the amount we agreed upon in the new lease via check. Once i realized that they had not had me sign the lease i cancelled the check and made an appointment to sign my lease and pay then. The day i signed my lease way May 19th. At that time i was informed by my leasing agent that it was entirely their fault that we were not contacted to sign. I was wondering if the rent i paid at that time was for the period of may 19th, or if it started on May 1st regardless of wether the new lease was signed or not.

Am i responsible for May 1st-May 19th payment if the lease was not in effect yet?

Re: Retroactive Lease

More than likely your old lease converted to a month-to-month lease, and the rent should have been the same for May as your old lease.
