Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California
My ''rights'' as a squatter...
I have lived in an apartment without
a lease for about 18 months. My
landlord suddenly raised the rent
substantially and is threatening me
to pay the raised rent or I'll be
evicted. Do I have any rights? What
does he have to do to get me out and
what kind of time frame do I have
before I have to vacate?
Thank you.

You are not a squatter.
As to your rights, I am enclosing a website from the California Courts.http://www.courtinfo.ca.gov/selfhelp/other/landtenqa-ten.htm
Re: My ''rights'' as a squatter...
You appear to be a tenant with a month to month oral lease. A squatter is someone who enters without permission of the owner and pays no rent. The landlord has to serve you with a three day or thirty day notice, depending on whether you pay the rent. Please look at similar tenant questions posted on this site to get a very good idea as to what can occur.
