Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California
Rights of Tenant When Owner Sales Property
The owners of the duplex I have been renting for the past 1-1/2 years sold the property. The duplex is still in escrow, but I was informed by the new owners agent today that the new owners have decided to move into my unit. How many days notice are the new owners required to give me to move and by law am I entitled to a relocating fee. Also, do I still have to pay the rent for August since I'll probably have to move by Sept. 1.

You'll have to continue to pay your rent. The new owners will serve you with a 60 day notice to quit. If you're in a rent-controlled district, you will be entitled to relocation fees of about $3600 to $8,000. Look for the rent stabilization ordinance LAMC section 151.01 et seq. for more info. You can find it on www.amlegal.com. Good Luck.
