You've probably already signed the lease before handing the landlord the security deposit. Therefore, it is doubtful that you would have a right to the security deposit back.

The best way to achieve that goal is to have a friendly discussion with the landlord and try to work something out. Because you signed the lease, you entered into an agreement, and unless there is some significant breach of performance on the landlord's part, you're generally stuck with its terms.
