Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

Security deposit

I sublet a room from a tenant with an $820 deposit. I moved out, but didn't demand the deposit back immediately because I knew he was broke. I know Cal. Civ. Code 1950.5(g)(1) gives him 21 days. Do I lose my right to the refund if I give him more time?

No!

I would get written I.O.U. or promissory note, however. Too many times people are "ripped off" by friends who disappear.
