Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

Security Deposits

Upon moving out, landlord sent check to me deducting various items I was not responsible for. E.g., shower door, new carpets, painting the apartment. Am I responsible for normal wear and tear?

Re: Security Deposits

You are not responsible for ordinary wear and tear. However, replacing a shower door is not usually considered ordinary wear and tear. New carpets and painting may be or may not be, depending on how long you lived there, what condition they were in when you first moved in and what condition they are in now.

I suggest you negotiate with your former landlord or find a mediation agency like Project Sentinel to resolve your dispute. If that fails, you can go to small claims court.
