in the state of California, is the tenant responsible for destruction of property caused by a guest, such a a wall or bathtub?

Yes. A guest enters the property with the permission of the tenant, consequently the tenant assumes liability for the guest's actions.

The tenant is in control of the premises. Therefore as between the landlord and tenant, the tenant is responsible for the actions of anyone they permit to enter the premises or who does damage to the premises through the negligence or misconduct of the tenant. The tenant may then have rights of indemnity and contribution from the offending party, but as between the landlord and tenant, the tenant is responsible.
