Sublet what power do I have

I am a subletting a condo. A room mate hadn't paid rent for 3 months, the land lord has done nothing about and threaten to kick us out. I opte to pay for that persons room ($600) in exchange for him to remove them. He took the money and has done nothing about it.

What rights do I have in this matter? Can I sue him for my $600 back?

We have no lease at all.

What rights does he have besides just kicking us out at any time?
