Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

temporary housing for tenants during repairs

I live in a building with three units, the owner of the building lives in one of the units. Recently, without any verbal or written warning, my landlord decided to tear out the carpet and replace it with tiles. I have been asked to all of a sudden,''find somewhere to stay''. I am wondering how much right the landlord has to do that ? Shouldn't he be required to pay for a hotel or something, or shouldn't i be entitlrd to a rent reduction? Your help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you, erica

** THIS ADVICE IS INTENDED TO GIVE YOU A TINY SLICE OF A GENERIC EDUCATION ON YOUR SUBJECT. THERE ARE ALMOST ALWAYS EXCEPTIONS AND "BUTs" AND "IFs" AND "MAYBEs"

** DO NOT RELY ON THIS ADVICE. USE IT TO FORM AN UNDERSTANDING AND THEN SEEK ADVICE AFTER FULL CONSULTATION WITH AN ATTORNEY IF YOU INTEND TO TAKE ACTION ***

Unless you agreed to something like this in the lease, feel free to tell him to stay the hell out of your apartment. If he wants to make improvements, he can ask you for your cooperation and the two of you can work out something fair and convenient. As long as you're complying with your obligations under the lease, it's YOUR residence.
