A business (including a landlord) is prohibited under the Unruh Act (Civil Code section 51) from discriminating against a person with disabilities. Thus, if you were to request accommodation in writing, the landlord might be required to reasonably accommodate you perhaps by giving you a space closer to the door/elevator, or a wider space if you use a wheelchair.
