Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

tenant rights

i have been back and forth with my landlord the past few months!

it started off as my sister didnt have anywhere to go so i offered her to stay with me since i have a two bedroom and am the only one occupying the premises!

he was not receptive to that, now he is monitoring my visitors. i work nights sometimes and am sleep in the day sometimes, i do however have company over some days! the landlord insists on telling me that i can not have company like that! what exactly is the legal boundaries of company i can have and is this legal what he is doing? i do not feel i should have to sneak around in my home, he has a garage under my apt which he says is his office, and he will sit in there and listen to me walk, monitor my footsteps and the water running.. what to do??

Re: tenant rights

You can not be prevented from having guests, visitors, etc. If you have a guest who stays longer than a transient period, e.g.., more than 1 month -- then the Landlord may require that person be added to the lease. Typically your lease will address this issue. We often write demand letters and breach of covenant of quiet enjoyment notices for clients. Our landlord tenant legal services provides this service for $100. Feel free to email or call if you are interested.
