During the tenant screening process, what questions can you legally ask of the previous landlord regarding the prospective tenant?

You can ask questions that are logically relevant as to accepting that tenant, the same type of questions as you could ask the tenant themselves. It protects you more if you can the tenants consent to ask such questions before doing so, and makes it more likely that the former landlord will honestly respond.
