What are our rights as tenants when the landlord knew that this house that we are renting now was in defaulf as of 2006, which was the same year we starting renting from him.

Keep a record of the rent you pay and present it to the new owners once the property is foreclosed. Since you're in Oakland, you might seek legal assistance, as many tenants are protected by the Oakland rent stabilization ordinance.
