Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

tenents losing keys

my tenents have lost key to mailbox. Post office is holding their mail requiring them to go to postoffice for pickup. New lock requires coordinating with mailcarrier to open box and replacing with new lock. A locksmith may be necessary and the cost of new lock. The tenent states that I - the landlord - is legally responsible for the cost not to mention the time. I live 65 miles away from my property. I feel its certainly the tenents duty. I didn't lose the mail key.

I agree. Stand your ground and refuse to pay. Sometimes legal questions are just plain common sense.
