Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California
How unhealthy of living conditions ARE allowed?
I live in a rental two bedroom that was once a large garage. It has no heat or air. The one thing that really bothers me is that it has a bathroom inside the house with only a tub and a sink. The actual toilet is in a room that is located by going out the back door to a room that is hooked up to the apartment but only acessable from the outside. Is this unlawful? And what should I do to fix the situation? And when I do this will I lose my place to live?I have two young children and that is my greatest worry. thank you and all the information I can get is appreciated.

Re: How unhealthy of living conditions ARE allowed?
What you described is NOT allowed. You should not be required to pay rent. However, when you complain, the city will tell the landlord that he cannot rent the space, and you will be required to move. You might be able to sue the landlord for all the rent you have paid since you lived there, because of its illegal nature.
