Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California
Ive been unlawfully evicted from my place of residence by the owner of the house who also lives in the same dwelling. He has followed no legal procedures to have me move out and he also kept my personal belongings from me as well as sold them on craigslist and thrown out in the garbage destroyed and unreplaceable. the total of all possessions come to estimate of $23,000. I know that i have to file a civil suit against him but is there any other information i need to know or that will help me get recouped for the damages? thanks

You would have to go over all the facts with an attorney to decide what else needs to be done. If the landlord really took away from you property worth $23,000, you should be able to find an attorney willing to represent you. If you have a written contract allowing for attorney fees, an attorney would be even more willing to represent you. But without knowing more details [were you paying rent, a guest, had written lease, exactly what notice given, time before sold your possessions, etc], none of us can tell you what you need to look for, aside from simple things such as determining the true ownership, any insurance coverage, covered by rent control, etc. if you truly have a case with over $23,000 in damages, it is worth spending the time to speak to several attorneys to find out how good your case is and what you might be able to get.
