Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in California

water from my bathroom damaged neighbors property, am I responsible for the dama

One evening my girlfriend fell asleep while running water into the bathtub. The water flooded the bathroom and leaked into our neighbors unit down stairs. The water was actually pouring from their bathroom fan. The water damaged their celing and walls to the extent that they had to move to a different unit. I have talked to one of the apartment manager and she informed me that I am responsible for all of the damages (all costs for removing and replacing drywall, carpet padding, etc), she also informed me that I am responsible for the moving costs of my downstairs tenants. It seems to me that the bathroom should have waterproof capabilities beyond a quarter inch of water on the floor. Am I really responsible for all of these expenses?
