Your contractor should be licensed, bonded, and insured, so it may be very worthwhile to determine whether you have a claim for property damage against him, unless it is a fly-by-night company with no assets. Your simple solution, however, may just be to submit a claim to your home owners' insurance. His faulty work will not be covered, but all the water damage, and any other damage, to your house from his faulty work should be covered under most polices, and then the insurance company will go after the contractor for reimbursement without you having to do anything.
