Legal Question in Legal Ethics in California

legal reasons for withdrawal

My fee agreement with my attorney states that either party may terminate the relationship for any reason, subject to any contrary requirements of law.

Can an attorney in a civil case withdraw at any time? What if the withdrawal leaves the client without representation on the eve of trial?

Re: legal reasons for withdrawal

That can be a dilemma. If it's the eve of trial, there must be a reason. Talk with your attorney immediately and in a nonconfrontation way, try to determine why the attorney no longer wishes to represent you. Immediately seek new counsel. You can't force someone to represent you who doesn't want to. Would you want the attorney to do so? Would you have confidence in continuing with an attorney who doesn't want to be there for and with you? Good luck!
