Legal Question in Legal Ethics in California

Opening and/or forwarding someone else's mail

Mine is a service oriented business. Mail is received from outside sources addressed ''to the family of...''. Some of this mail is soliciting religion and can contain offensive material. What is my obligation in forwarding know distastful mail, and if it is forwarded is there a ''disclaimer'' that should be included stating the contents of this forwarded mail is not solicited or endorsed by my organization?

Is it illegal to open mail that is to be forwarded to another person or persons?

Re: Opening and/or forwarding someone else's mail

I'm not sure why you are forwarding mail in the first place, unless it's to a person who used to be at that address. All you need to do is mark it "Not at this address, return to sender," and return it to the letter carrier. There's no need for you to even look at it.
