Legal Question in Legal Ethics in California

Union Bugs

The sales and marketing team where I work are wanting to put the union bug on their business cards to attract union business - although we are not union. Do you see any ethical and/or legal considerations in doing so?

Thank you for your time.

Re: Union Bugs

If they use a union printer to create the cards, then the union bug would be appropriate. Otherwise, it's a possible misleading use and those deceived could become pretty angry about it if they found out.

Re: Union Bugs

First and foremost, there is probably a copyright attached to the use of the union bug. I suspect that permission is required before you could use the logo and the union would probably have certain terms and conditions related to the use of the logo.

Use of the logo might falesly imply that you are a union shop. In addition to angering the union, this could be used as the basis for an unfair competition lawsuit by your competitors. It certainly doesn't sound ethical and probably is not legal.
