How do you verify an attorney is really an attorney

How does one verify if an attorney is really an attorney. I have checked with the State Bar records and they have no listing of this person.

Also isn't it against the law to advertise that you are an attorney and or to pose as one?

the state bar is the way to check. yes, it is against the law. you can report them to your local prosequting authority.
