Legal Question in Legal Ethics in California

My wife had our 4 year old Weimaraner on his leash for a walk with my 1 yr old daughter on her stroller and as they where approaching a vacant lot a mid size dog came running around the corner showing aggression towards my wife and child. The dog was without a leash startled my wife and our dog. As the mid size dog approached our dog pulled and my wife let go of the leash. Our dog didn't move but did defend himself and caused the other dog to bleed. The incident happen so quick that it looked like our dog grab and shook the other dog and immediately let go. The owner of the off leash dog grabbed her dog and ran home. My wife tried talking to her to see if her dog was okay and didn't respond. Here comes MY QUESTION, I ran into the husband about a week later and he confronted me about what happen, he is indicating that his dog was injured and they had vet bills of over $5,500 that he wanted to talk to me about. I am assuming wants me to pay for the vet bills. Please advice on what is the right thing to do. MY dog has never had an aggression problem, he was on his leash and dont feel completely responsible for the damages. I did see their dog later in the week and seemed fine to me.
