Legal Question in Legal Malpractice in California

In order to sue, must one be innocent of a crime?

In a civil action against a law firm for faulty assistance and advice, must I prove my innocence of the crime before I can sue them even if I am not suing them for the conviction? There was no legal representation nor attorney-client relationship.

It's hard to understand why you would sue a firm that did not represent you. Please provide more details and I and my colleagues can give you some direction.
