Legal Question in Personal Injury in California
I have a batting cage in my backyard and we coach a girls softball team. We want them to be able to practing their hitting here, if I have the parents sign a release of liability will this protect me if one of them get hurt? The league has insurance on all the players would this cover them?

1. It depends on how they get hurt and what the release says. 2. Ask the league's insurance broker about the coverage. Also you should check with your home owner's insurance agent. You likely have at least some coverage there depending on the causation of the injury.
I agree with Mr. McCormick. I would also suggest you ask some very specific questions regarding any coverage that is in place. Such as: How is it limited? Generally these types of coverages are limited to sanctioned events or practices. I would want to know if having the practice session in your backyard changes it from a league practice to a private situation and if it does how might this effect the league's coverage. I would ask a similar question of your own agent so that you don't find yourself in a catch 22. The league's insurance carrier claims it is not covered because it was not a league practice session since it was in your backyard. Then your insurance claims it isn't covered since it was a league practice and not a private event. Stuff like that can be very frustrating and hard to fight. So do as Mr. McCormick suggested, and do your due diligence/homework before allowing the practice sessions in your backyard.
