Legal Question in Personal Injury in California
''Beware of Dog'' sign
Must I post a ''Beware of Dog'' sign on or at my place of residence, in this case, a boat? The dog is very protective. People often walk by and sometimes the dog is on deck. He doesn't jump off the boat, but barks furiously. He could, conceivably bite a hand that invaded ''his'' space.

There is strict liabiliy for dog bites. That means that if your dog bites, you have to pay. There is no defense. Get good insurance. I have defended pitbull owners and the damages can be enormous. I had to settle one case for ten million dollars and that was at least 12 years ago. You put yourself a great risk having a dog. I practice in California and Indiana. As sign won't help you at all.

Your question has been sent to me as I specialize in Personal Injury law.
Based on the facts that you have given me, common sense would definitely dictate that you put up a conspicious sign indicating the presence of your dog on your boat. It might also be reasonable to put up some type of barrier on the boat so that your dog cannot jump off the boat onto the docks. Keep in mind that there is no "one free bite" in California and by statute, you are held strictly liable for any injuries caused by your dog to include knocking someone over (or into the water)
There may also be local or county leash laws which pertain to your situation. You should check with your city or county animal control to determine if there are any specific regulations that you should follows.

Re: ''Beware of Dog'' sign
You are not required to post a sign but whether you do or not you are absolutely liable for ANY dog bite.
