Legal Question in Personal Injury in California

my friend was driving someones else car and was involved in a accident, they paid the property damage to the tree, but did not cover the collision damage to the car. he has tried various times to call the insurance company to get them to pay for the damages and they have said no way.

Who paid for the damage to the tree? Whose insurance company did he call? The vehicle owner should call his or her own insurance compay about the damage to the car.
