Legal Question in Personal Injury in California

Hi, I was involved in a hit & run a few years ago, and i had a witness who was also a friend give me the license plate # of the person which was very distinctive. I then followed through with the case and hired an attorney to represent me a few years ago. I also never heard from her after that, as she moved away to another state. i am now starting to think she gave me a wrong license plate #, and i am about to go to trial in the next month or so. What should I do? I dont want to go through with something i am not 100% sure of, and to make someone pay for something they potentially could have not done.... meaning the driver of the vehicle.
