what kind of case would it be?
I was severely injured on the job and lost part of a limb. would it be considered a personal injury suit or just a workers comp suit

Generally, it is a workers comp case. However, depending on the facts, you may have a personal injury case. You should talk to an attorney about your specifics.

If there is a third party in addition to your employer involved in your injury, you have a worker's compensation case against your employer and a third party civil lawsuit against the third party. Any bodily injury case that is related to one's employment is a WC case in which you go against your employer's workers' compensation insurance company for certain benefits. If the injury was caused by some one from a different company or a piece of faulty equipment manufactured from another. Remember you have to fill out the first report of work form; to sue someone else, you must do so within 2 years
