Legal Question in Personal Injury in California
Paid/not Paid list posting and e-mail
We are a non-profit organization. Our organization collects membership dues in the amount of $20 per person or $30 per family. We have a bulletin board that is situated in a public place. We post a list of members who has paid and not paid their dues on that board. Members are not obligated to renew their annual membership. We don't know if those who have not paid wish to renew. We also plan on sending an e-mail to everyone in the list showing who has paid and not paid. Are we in any danger of getting sued for anything (slander/libel?) by doing this? We are worried about those people who might find offense in this practice. We are worried people might think we are making them look bad by exposing to everyone they are delinquent if they intend to renew and appear delinquent if they don't.

I agree with Mr. Roth.

Your concern is a good one. It's nobody's business whether a member renews or not. Send an email reminder that membership is expired and an invitation to renew, but do not send out a list as you are contemplating.
