If you are not happy with a lawyer and cannot resolve your unhappiness fairly easily you should change lawyers. In a PI case there is no cost to you to change lawyers. The new lawyer will take care of any claim for compensation from the old lawyer.

Before you bolt, make an appointment to talk with the lawyer himself, rather than his assistants. Then, address your concerns, and find out what's been going on behind the scenes.
Sometimes, it takes a while to accumulate all of the medical records, police reports, and the defendant's side of the story. Perhaps better communications should be established between you and the lawyer. Perhaps the lawyer can agree to update you by a short letter or a monthly invoice (as I do) that would show the work that has been done.
If you remain dissatisfied, you have a right to have the lawyer of your choice. If a case has been filed in court, you will need your lawyer's signature on a substitution of attorney form. Your lawyer might try to put a lien on the case for the value of his time and expenses, which would make your case a bit less appealing to another attorney -- depending on the extent of your injuries and damages. Good luck to you!
