Legal Question in Personal Injury in California

Can a plantif file a claim against the defendent for 1million dollars even of the defendant is no where in that price range? It was a drunk driving accident

The plaintiff can sue for whatever sum of money he wants, as unless it is verified [signed under penalty of perjury] nothing is said under oath of it being true. In California one is not supposed to mentioned the sum being sued for except to say whether it is greater or less than $15,000 or $7,500 [to determine which court it should be in].

If you were convicted of a felony that was the cause of the accident, a little know code section would allow plaintiff to collect attorney fees from you.
