Legal Question in Personal Injury in California

My son's mother allowed my 16 year old permitted but unlicensed son to drive a short distance in a car by himself. Thank God, nothing happened, but, as his father, could I also be held responsible if this type of thing happens without my knowledge or consent? What can I do to protect myself?
