Legal Question in Personal Injury in California

I was sued for rear ending a SUV 4 runner. At the time I was driving my mothers ford Taurus and the collision was very minor, technically I bumped into the SUV. The damage on her vehicle was a little scratch and small amount of paint came off mine. I was a 17 years old at the time with a drivers permit and a driver licensed passenger over the age of 18. There was no police report because the collision was very minor; however, the other driver obtained my insurance info. I got sued last year just after turning 19 and one week before the statue of limitations. As it turned out, at the instant of the accident the insurance was cancelled without my mothers concern and refused to cover the accident. I also came to find that I wasnt listed in the household policy. I was being helped by a pro-bono attorney with the paperwork. Recently I got a statement from the other ladies insurance company claiming that I owe 15,621.86 in damages because thats what they had to pay the lady who sued me. I dont have a job, Im a full time student and I wanted to know what would happened if I avoid paying this and if theres any options for me to obtain help?
