Legal Question in Personal Injury in California

I have a teenage daughter, age 17, who is now licensed to drive. If she drives my car and she is not added as an additional driver on my auto policy is she excluded from coverage under my policy? I will face a huge increase in premiums by adding her as a driver. What is the difference in liability and coverage if she is not added and is driving my vehicle?

She will not be covered and you will be personally liable for any damage she causes.

Either she gets her own policy, or you add her to yours. Right now she is driving without insurance and that is illegal. Don't break the law. Do the right thing.

The difference between liability and coverage if you do not add her as an insured driver on your policy is that liability will be unlimited and coverage will be zero. She causes an accident that smashes the hands of a 35 year old plastic surgeon, or puts a 20-something in 24hr attended care for life, and they will take everything you own. And if she gets in an accident that is the other driver's fault and that leaves her permanently scarred or in chronic pain, she will get nothing for pain and suffering because uninsured motorists cannot recover "general damages."
