Legal Question in Real Estate Law in California

I agreed to watch a lady's dog for 3 days. It has been two weeks and I have tried calling her and texting her everyday. She will not respond to me. I feel as though she has dumped her dog on me. I've sent her text messages threatening to take her dog to the shelter and still no answer. How long do I need to keep the dog? What are my next steps? Please help. I am pregnant and going into labor within the next few weeks and I cannot take care of this dog. Thank you...

There are several provisions in the Civil Code covering similar, but not identical, situations where animals are abandoned (by leaving them behind when moving, by not picking them up at the vet or boarding facility, etc. By analogy to the rules in those situations, I'd say if you are pretty sure the owner has been getting the messages, you've already complied with your duties, and may contact a shelter or animal control officer and turn the dog over to them right now. The possibly relevant code sections are Civil Code sections 1815(d), 1816(b) through (e), 1834, 1834.4, 1834.5, 1834.6, 1834.7, 1846(b) and (c), and 1847(b).
