No counterclaims are permitted. However, you could file a separate suit and attempt to join or relate the two cases.

You want to file an Answer -- Unlawful Detainer, found on the Judicial Council website. Many localities have volunteer attorneys at the courthouse or in the community to help tenants with these tasks.
