Apartment leases and ownership transfer

If I have a lease with an apartment complex and they change ownership and raise my rent, does that invalidate the lease I had? If I pay the higher rent does that automatically put me on a new lease? What am I responsible for?

the new owner is held to the terms of the lease. they cannot raise the rent unless allowed by the lease.
