Legal Question in Real Estate Law in California
I was approved for an apartment and told I needed to turn in the security deposit today. I planned to head there early from work but received a call mid day saying sorry someone else brought in the security deposit and now has the unit. I was not told it was a race or I'd have left work completely to rush there. Is this legal to not provide me with all the information needed after telling me I have the unit then giving it to someone else? The money I spent was an application fee which they said they keep now, and are offering me another unit for the same price but it's not same size/location.

Did you put down a holding deposit to hold the unit for you?
