Legal Question in Real Estate Law in California

I had a boat I sold last year and yesterday I got a letter saying it was impounded. I told the chp I sold it and they ask to who, I said I don't remeber his name. since the boat is in my name still according to the chp can I get it and keep it? or should I let it sit in the impound lot?

Did he pay by check so that you could get a copy of the check and contact him? Don't you have some writing showing that he bought the boat from you? Was it in any port harbor or landing where he would have to fill out some paperwork to be able to contilnue to rent the slip?

You have no legal right to the boat. However, if you intend to give the boat back to the owner when you find him or he finds you, no one is going to complain about what you did. You would be entitled to get back the impound fee you paid. Why was the boat impounded? If it was your fault you might not be entitled to get the impound fee back.
