Legal Question in Real Estate Law in California
We are buying an reo house with a homepath loan. we were supposed to start escrow. The previous owner contacted a lawyer and is holding up the start of escrow. It was bought by him in 2006 for $410,000 and was foreclosed on. We are buying for $162,000. Is this something we should be worried about? Nobody seems to know anything?

I suggest speaking at length with a competent real estate attorney who is familiar with foreclosure law. That lawyer should be able to evaluate whether the homeowner has any valid claim to an improper foreclosure.
