In California, can a buyer's agent sue you for using a different agent to buy a home after they've worked with you, showing houses and sending listings? No contract was written, and the home bought was not one shown by the first agent.

Probably not successfully, though any one can sue you for anything. That's a pretty crappy thing to do for an agent who has worked for you and devoted time to your search. Since the Seller pays the commission, why do you prefer to screw your broker? Did they not rpovide good service? Is there a reason you do not want them representing you? Perhaps there is more you have not stated.
Real estate agents are not entitled to commissions unless they have a supervising broker and their is a written agreement in place for a commission. Buyer's brokers don't share a commission with the seller's broker unless there is an agreement.
