If you have been served with a summons and complaint, you should consider getting a lawyer to represent you, or at least to read the papers served on you and explain the requirements for an effective answer.

A form for use as an Answer in simple cases can be found on the Judicial Council's Web site, along with 100s of other legal forms approved or required for various uses in the California courts. Often, a lawyer-prepared answer will serve the purpose better than the form.

When you go the the Web site using the link provided by Mr. Cohen, you'll be asked to select a group of forms. Look under "Pleading." There are four subgroups of Pleading forms- general, contract, unlawful detainer and (I think) auto accident. Choose the right category depending on the type of suit shown by the papers served on you.

The forms can be filled out on line, but must be printed and filed (and served) as hard copies.
