A co-signer on a lease

I had agreed to co-sign for a friend to get an apartment.

I was told I was not needed and never signed anything except the initial credit application form. The person has defaulted on her lease agreement and they are now coming after me for the money. As I did not sign a Lease agreement as a co-signer, am i responsible in any way?. The collection company are harassing me, threating to take away my car and have my wages garnished. Please help. Thank you.

It's very difficult to give you legal advice when I can't review the document you signed. However, if the credit application was to rent the apartment. They may have you. The good news is they should have re-rented the unit in no more than two months. The landlord has a duty to mitigate your damages by getting new tenants into the unit as fast as possible.
