Legal Question in Real Estate Law in California

When is a co-signer not liable anymore?

If you co-sign a rental agreement for someone and the lease is for six months, are you still liable after the six months when the lease goes to a month to month?

It depends on what agreement says. Since leases usually turn into month to month you probably continue to be liable. The tenant should now sign a new lease.

Thanks for your posting. As a co-signer, you are either pledging to pay 1/2 of the rent, or you are promising to pay in case of default of the other person. In most cases, that would be for the entire contract, not just for a specified period.
