Legal Question in Real Estate Law in California
My Credit history has been hit after 6 years of having moved out an apartment in Charlotte, NC. I currently live in San Jose, CA. So apparently the apartment management office was trying to pin some one down for some small dues from my colleague who stayed in that apartment after me. But I had transferred the ease to my colleagues name before I left and my colleague renewed his lease by another year after I was gone. They tried getting the payment from him which he disputed. Now suddenly after 6 years, they hit my credit history by sending my SSN which was on their file, This is completely unfair and dishonest. Can I sue them for this? Is there a Lawyer I can look for an opinion on this matter.

You will need to consult a NC lawyer regarding NC defamation law.
I think a better solution is to use the credit-rating agencies error-correction routines. All three major credit-rating bureaus at least give lip service to complete willingness to review mistakes and those based upon mistaken identities or clearly erroneous reporting of names should be the easiest to fix. I am not naive enough to believe the credit agencies are angels or are on the consumers' side, but I am sure they respond to well-documented claims of error.
Defamation cases are disfavored in most courts and hard to prove. When the defamation and alleged damages result from credit-reporting errors, winning a significant (financial) victory is even a bigger risk.
I suggest reposting this question to North Carolina's section. You need a North Carolina attorney to advise you on this matter, based on the information you have given.
