Legal Question in Real Estate Law in California
Damage to carpeting in a rental with only $99 deposit
Can the apartment complex make me pay for damaged carpet out of my pocket when I only had to put a $99 deposit, or are they allowed to only take out of the deposit for moving out expenses?

Do you suppose that if you had put up no deposit at all, you could damage anything and pay nothing? Your liability for damage is unrelated to the security deposit; the deposit is only a means to facilitate collection.
